Concussion Return-to-Play Protocol
A step-by-step guide to safely returning a youth athlete to sport after a concussion, based on the Berlin 2023 international consensus statement.
The 6 Stages
- Stage 1: Symptom-limited activity — daily activities that do not provoke symptoms
- Stage 2: Light aerobic exercise — walking, swimming, stationary cycling
- Stage 3: Sport-specific exercise — running drills, no head impact
- Stage 4: Non-contact training drills — resistance training, complex movements
- Stage 5: Full-contact practice — medical clearance required first
- Stage 6: Return to competition — normal game play
Important: Each stage should take a minimum of 24 hours. If symptoms recur, return to the previous stage. Always consult a healthcare professional.
